How Long Does Invisalign Take? | Surry Hills Dentist

Missed our last two posts? We talked about Invisalign Prep 101: What to Expect and Invisalign Cost Guide: Which Treatment Tier Fits You Best?

So you’re thinking about straightening your teeth - and the next thing you’re wondering is:

“How long is this going to take?”

If you are wondering about how long does Invisalign takes. Honestly? It depends. (I refrained from saying ‘how long is a piece of string’)

But hear me out.

No two smiles are the same. Some patients come in with one pesky tooth doing its own thing after braces 10 years ago. Others have never had orthodontics and want to fix everything - crowded teeth, bite. Same Invisalign trays — very different journeys.

Quick Answer: How Long Does Invisalign Take?
Invisalign treatment length depends on how many aligner trays you need, with each tray worn for about 7 days (or 10–14 days if your teeth feel wobbly or tender). As a guide, Invisalign Light (14 trays) takes around 14 weeks of active wear, while Moderate (26 trays) takes about 6 months; though it's realistic to plan for extra time for refinements, roughly doubling your original tray count for a true total.

Here’s what we can tell you:

  1. Each aligner moves teeth about 0.25mm or 2 degrees of rotation

  2. You wear each tray for 7 days (yes, every day, all day except eating/brushing)

  3. Invisalign comes in different packages, each with its own limits on aligner number:

    • Express – 7 aligners

    • Light – 14 aligners

    • Moderate – 26 aligners

    • Comprehensive – unlimited aligners

So if you’re on, say, Invisalign Light (14 trays), you’ll be wearing aligners for 14 weeks.

BUT. And it’s a big but.

We almost always recommend building in extra time for refinements, or fine-tuning — those last few tweaks to get things chef’s kiss perfect. Sometimes, unexpected things happen that may delay progress, like losing a tray, not wearing it the optimum amount of time, or traveling overseas.

Rule of thumb? Double your tray count to get a realistic total treatment time.

That means Light (14 trays) = around 28 weeks, Moderate (26 trays) = around 11-12 months.  Of course, we have plenty of patients, with excellent wear time, not need any extra aligners for refinements, too.

We’ll always customise your plan to your goals, your bite, and how your teeth behave.

Because while Invisalign is science, your body is still human, and you can’t cheat biology.

And remember: faster isn’t always better. The best smile is the one that lasts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Invisalign treatment take on average?

Treatment length varies widely because it's based on how many aligner trays you need, with each tray worn for about 7 days. As a rough guide, Invisalign Light (14 trays) takes around 14 weeks of active wear, while Moderate (26 trays) takes about 26 weeks; though most patients should plan for extra time for refinements. Your dentist can give you a personalised estimate at your consultation.

What is the difference between Invisalign Express, Light, Moderate, and Comprehensive?

These are Invisalign's treatment tiers, each with a different aligner allowance: Express includes 7 aligners, Light includes 14, Moderate includes 26, and Comprehensive is unlimited. The right tier depends on how much correction your teeth need; from a single stubborn tooth to a full realignment of crowding and bite issues.

Why does Invisalign often take longer than the initial aligner count suggests?

Because most patients need some extra aligners for refinements; small final adjustments to get results looking their best. As a rule of thumb, it's realistic to roughly double your original tray count to estimate total treatment time, since factors like wear time, travel, or a lost tray can also add time.

How much do teeth move with each Invisalign aligner tray?

Each aligner tray typically moves your teeth about 0.25mm, or rotates them about 2 degrees. This gradual, precisely calculated movement is why each tray needs to be worn for about 7 days before switching to the next one in your series.

Can Invisalign treatment be delayed or take longer than planned?

Yes, several things can extend your treatment time, including not wearing your aligners for the recommended hours each day, losing a tray, or travelling overseas without your aligners. Consistent wear is the biggest factor in staying on track, and your dentist can help you get back on schedule if something throws off your timeline.

Is a shorter Invisalign treatment time better?

Not necessarily; a treatment that's rushed can compromise the final result, since teeth need adequate time to move safely and settle into their new position. At Surry Hills Dental Centre, we customise your plan to your goals and how your teeth respond, because a longer-lasting result is generally better than a faster one that doesn't hold.

Do I still change trays every 7 days if my teeth feel wobbly or sore?

Not necessarily; if your teeth feel unusually wobbly or tender, it's fine to extend wear on that tray to 10–14 days instead of the standard 7 before moving to the next one. This gives your teeth more time to settle, and it's worth letting your dentist know so they can confirm it's normal for your stage of treatment.
